Real Living Australia Day Shoot

The gang took their own hand to photography whilst I wasn't looking and in the kitchen preparing dessert...

For the past few months I've been very fortunate to have been booked on a regular basis to shoot for Real Living magazine. It's a brilliant publication covering all things real in homes, interiors, shopping, food and general lifestyle topics. When I renovated my own home in Melbourne I found Real Living was one of the most useful publications for envisaging the designs and ideas we had in mind. The homes are real and attainable and products listed for the home do not cost 20 gazillion dollars. I was delighted too therefore when my renovation actually got featured in print in the magazine a few months later in Aug 2010.

Apart from all the lovely gang at Real Living; John, Chris, Amanda, Sarah etc, I often work with their food editor Ali Irvine on the food shoots and we always have a blast here at my home studio, it's super relaxed and there are always loads of laughs and giggles plus as a huge bonus is I get to nibble at all the amazing food Ali whips up effortlessly for each shoot.
Real Living's editor, the lovely Deborah Bibby asked me a couple of months back to cook, style and shoot an article for one of their upcoming Summer editions and we decided a casual BBQ with friends and family for Australia Day (Jan 26th) would be a fun idea.

The day was really enjoyable, I'll admit it was a lot of work but with the help of all my buddies who agreed to be part of the shoot, the day flowed seamlessly. At one point when I was in the kitchen preparing dessert along with Sophie Geoghegan (who was a wonderful and utterly invaluable assistant to me on the day), we heard a HUGE roar of laughter and on rushing out to see what was going on, we discovered the gang had decided to try their own hand at photography, sticking all their heads under the camera which was suspended over the table and the started snapping away using the remote trigger. When their first shot popped up on the laptop screen which was tethered to the camera, they erupted in laughter in total unison, it was hilarious :)

I thought it would be fun to post up a little article on the editorial and show a bit of the background to the shoot. The Jan/Feb edition of Real Living went on sale yesterday and you can read all about it's contents here.

I am so freaking impressed. How the heck did you even do that Katie? The images are vibrant, flawless and stunning. The food beautifully executed. Couldn't be a cuter and more fun group of people. Well done, I applaud you and am full of envy. And boy am I missing that summer sun and all the food to boot.

Is there any chance you might be able to publish the meat pie recipe?? I am an Aussie living in Switzerland and your photos are making me homesick!

Love the photos. Congrats on the magazine spread!

What camera lens do you have on your camera there? Do you have any preferred lenses you use when shooting food?

I'm looking to buy another lens and if you can recommend any, I'd appreciate it.
